The Bollywood Museum at Film City, Goregaon, was envisioned as a global cultural destination celebrating the legacy and continuing evolution of Indian cinema. A consortium of Shashi Prabhu & Associates (SPA), Mumbai, and Verner Johnson, Boston, was appointed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and undertake the architectural design for this landmark project.

Conceived as more than a conventional museum, the project was planned as an immersive experience that traces Bollywood’s journey from its early years to its worldwide influence today. Located within the historic Film City precinct, the museum was intended to strengthen Mumbai’s position on the global cultural map alongside leading international cinema institutions.

The building’s architecture forms its most powerful identity. The façade and roof are designed to resemble a flowing movie reel, symbolising movement, narrative, and the passage of time. This sculptural form creates an instantly recognisable landmark, transforming the museum into an icon that is visually compelling by day and dramatically illuminated at night. Internally, the museum accommodates interactive exhibition galleries, screening halls, archival spaces, and public concourses, enabling a flexible and evolving program. The design supports exhibitions, premieres, festivals, and live events, ensuring the museum remains vibrant and relevant for diverse audiences—from film enthusiasts to casual visitors.

SPA’s contribution focused on contextual planning, regulatory integration, and detailed coordination within the Film City environment, while Verner Johnson brought international expertise in cultural and performance-oriented spaces. Together, the consortium delivered a proposal that balances iconic architectural expression with functional clarity, positioning the Bollywood Museum as a destination poised to attract visitors from across India and around the world.
