Bus Station at Dhule

The proposed Bus Station at Dhule, designed by Shashi Prabhu and Associates, is conceived as a contemporary civic landmark that brings together the functional demands of a busy public transport facility with a strong sense of regional identity. The project seeks to transform the everyday experience of bus travel into a more welcoming, legible and dignified public environment.

The architectural expression is anchored by a bold central entrance portal, which establishes a clear point of arrival and gives the station a recognisable civic presence. Flanking this central volume, the building is articulated through a rhythmic concrete structural frame and recessed openings. Terracotta brick screens form a defining element of the façade, introducing warmth and texture while providing shade and filtered daylight to the interior spaces. The use of brick jaalis is both aesthetic and environmental. The porous screens moderate direct sunlight, encourage ventilation and create a layer of transition between the public concourse and the building. Against the robust expression of exposed concrete, the terracotta elements lend the architecture a distinctly Indian character, rooted in materiality and climate-responsive design. A generous covered arrival canopy extends along the frontage, creating a protected pedestrian zone between the station building and the bus movement areas. The deep canopy provides shade and shelter while clearly organising passenger movement, drop-offs and waiting areas. The forecourt is conceived as an active public realm, accommodating buses, autorickshaws, pedestrians and informal activity without compromising clarity of circulation.

Landscape plays an important role in softening the predominantly hard urban edge. Rows of trees and planted buffers frame the building and help create a more comfortable pedestrian environment. The landscaped median and carefully structured vehicular movement further reinforce the separation between through traffic, public transport and pedestrian zones.
