The Garware Club House, designed by Shashi Prabhu & Associates, stands as a modern interpretation of a sports and social facility within the historic fabric of the Wankhede Stadium precinct in Mumbai. The architectural vision was to create a multifunctional clubhouse that resonates with the city’s sporting legacy while offering a contemporary lifestyle experience for its members.
This contemporary designed structure places beautifully as a foreground to the modern mass of Wankhede Stadium, which was recently renovated by us as part of the complex. It curates the era gone by, while embracing the new-age lifestyle.
The design philosophy focused on achieving functional clarity, fluid circulation, and contextual harmony. The clubhouse is organized as a series of horizontal volumes and layered terraces, ensuring seamless connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. The architecture reflects a dual character—exclusive yet inclusive, where members enjoy privacy but remain visually connected to the adjoining stadium and urban surroundings. The planning is zoned for intuitive flow, with social and dining areas positioned for easy access, while sports facilities like squash courts, gymnasiums, and wellness areas are placed deeper within for privacy. The structural system uses reinforced concrete framing with long-span beams, allowing flexible layouts for banquet halls, lounges, and event spaces without intrusive columns. The façade features clean linear elements, high-performance glazing, and shading devices that maximize natural light while reducing heat gain. Materials such as glass, concrete, and aluminum cladding are used to balance modernity with durability. Landscaped podiums and green forecourts soften the building mass, enhancing its human scale. Key architectural highlights include elevated viewing decks and terraces overlooking the cricket field, creating a unique spectator experience during events. Natural ventilation, daylighting strategies, and green pockets enhance comfort, making the clubhouse a refreshing urban retreat. The Garware Club House thus embodies Mumbai’s sporting culture, while Shashi Prabhu’s architectural approach blends functionality, sustainability, and a timeless aesthetic.
