Lusofonia Games - Goa

For the 2014 Lusofonia Games, Goa underwent a major sporting infrastructure transformation, with Shashi Prabhu & Associates spearheading the planning and architectural design of key venues. The objective was to create international-standard, multi-sport facilities while respecting Goa’s unique cultural and environmental context.

A key highlight was the GMC Athletic Stadium at Bambolim, a new IAAF-compliant athletics arena designed with a 3,600‑seat gallery, an eight-lane synthetic track, and integrated training areas. The architectural planning prioritized clear sightlines, athlete-friendly circulation, and efficient crowd management. The use of lightweight roofing and modular structures allowed quick construction while minimizing environmental impact.

The Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium at Bambolim was adapted for basketball and volleyball, featuring column-free large-span roofs, acoustically treated interiors, and climate-responsive design. At Peddem Indoor Stadium, Mapusa, the refurbishment enhanced facilities for judo, taekwondo, table tennis, and wushu, optimizing spectator comfort and functional zoning for athletes.

For football, the Tilak Maidan and Fatorda Stadiums were upgraded with improved turf, seating, lighting, and media facilities, aligning with FIFA standards. Across all venues, the design approach balanced functionality, sustainability, and cost-efficiency, ensuring facilities could serve the community long after the Games.

Landscaping, circulation planning, and integrated athlete zones emphasized the spirit of an international sporting event while retaining a Goan architectural character with simple, climate-conscious forms. Through these interventions, Shashi Prabhu & Associates not only delivered venues capable of hosting the Lusofonia Games but also left a lasting legacy of modern sports infrastructure in Goa, blending global standards with local identity.
