The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Indu Mill, Mumbai, is envisioned as a powerful national symbol of justice, equality, and intellectual legacy. Designed by a jv comprising of Shashi Prabhu & Associates and Design Associates, this memorial is anchored by a 450-foot-tall statue of Dr. Ambedkar, which, upon completion, will be the second tallest statue in India, following the Statue of Unity.

Positioned prominently along Mumbai’s Dadar seafront, the statue rises from a monumental plinth designed in the form of a Buddhist stupa, symbolizing Dr.Ambedkar’s spiritual transformation and philosophical alignment with the principles of Buddhism. The posture and expression of the statue convey resolve, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to democratic values.  Spread across 12.5 acres, the memorial complex includes a museum and interpretation gallery, a research centre and library, meditation spaces, an open-air amphitheatre, and landscaped gardens with reflection pools and a ceremonial eternal flame. Each space is designed to offer visitors a multi-dimensional experience—educational, spiritual, and reflective. Materiality and form draw from both monumental and contemplative traditions. Indigenous stone, water features, shaded walkways, and sustainable design strategies ensure harmony with climate and context, while universal accessibility makes the memorial inclusive to all.  More than just a commemorative structure, the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial is a spatial manifestation of India’s constitutional vision—a tribute to a towering figure whose ideas continue to shape the nation. Through its scale, symbolism, and thoughtful design, it aspires to become a lasting landmark of democratic pride and social progress.
