Balewadi Sports City, located on the outskirts of Pune, is a landmark project in Indian sports infrastructure, designed by Shashi Prabhu & Associates. Spanning over 150 acres, it was conceived to host the National Games and later chosen as the venue for the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008. The complex exemplifies integrated masterplanning, where competition venues, training centres, athlete housing, and community amenities coexist within a coherent architectural and functional framework.

The theme for the games was green. We captured the essence of this theme in conceptualisation, design and execution. The end result was extensive green architecture across the 158-acre campus.

The design philosophy centers on clarity, modularity, and climate sensitivity. The planning ensures easy movement for athletes and spectators, logical zoning of events, and efficient services management. At the heart of the complex lies the main athletics stadium, with a bold cantilevered roof structure and sculptural concrete geometry that provides both shade and identity.  The campus includes a world-class Aquatics Centre, an Indoor Multipurpose Arena, Tennis Courts, a Shooting Range, and Hockey and Football grounds— each tailored to international specifications. Buildings are designed using simple, modular forms, with large spans and column-free interiors to allow flexibility.  Responding to Pune’s climate, the architecture emphasizes passive cooling, shaded walkways, and natural ventilation. Local stone, concrete, and exposed structural systems lend the campus a robust, timeless aesthetic.Importantly, the complex integrates training academies, residential blocks for athletes, and public access areas—bridging elite sports with grassroots engagement.  Balewadi Sports City stands as a benchmark for multi-sport infrastructure in India, combining functionality, resilience, and architectural clarity. The work of Shashi Prabhu & Associates here demonstrates how thoughtful design can catalyze long-term sporting excellence and community activation in a rapidly urbanizing region.
