The Commons @ The IIM Mumbai

We are excited to share a glimpse of one of the most defining spaces in the upcoming Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai campus — The Commons @ The IIM Mumbai.

This structure is envisioned as the heart of the campus, a place where every student’s journey begins. The upper level features a semi-open amphitheatre, designed as a dynamic social hub for dialogues, performances, and community engagement. Clad in a meticulously crafted GRC façade, the form creates a play of light and shadow, giving the building a sense of rhythm and contemporary identity.

 

What we love most is the way the building meets the ground. The entire volume is raised on an expressive cluster of tree-like columns, intentionally designed to evoke the feeling of walking through a forest — a motif that recurs throughout the masterplan. This structural “urban forest” not only supports the building physically but also symbolizes the values of growth, rootedness, and branching possibilities that define an IIM campus.

As we continue shaping the new IIM Mumbai, this space will stand as a welcoming gesture to generations of students — a place that inspires, gathers, and ignites ideas.
